Off Season Training

After a long hard season it is important to take a mental and physical break from the demands of triathlon. Competing in any sport that requires a high volume of training can have a detrimental effect on the body. If we continue to push it, it will eventually lead to pain and injury. Many athletes develop symptoms associated with overtraining, including aching legs, restless nights, uncontrollable eating, mood swings, and sometimes only feel better after performing a workout. This is the time to ease off and enjoy the break!!

Of course you can keep training and build your aerobic base, just make sure you are mentally and physically fit and ready to go at the start of the next season. As one of our athletes we offer base training programmes which ensure you stay focussed and disciplined but don't do too much.

If base training is not for you then why not try some mountain biking for a change, enjoy some long walks and swim for fun rather than pushing out the lengths.

The off season is also a good time to work on a few weaknesses. If your swim technique needs some work then book a few lessons. The off season is a chance to train with others and enjoy the social aspects of the sport a little more.

Spend time with those around you who have been supportive during the race season. Triathlon can be a selfish sport at times and the post season can be a good opportunity to put in some groundwork with your loved ones and earn their support for another year!

The off season is also a great time to start thinking about your goals for next year. One thing we all learn in triathlon is that you need to be organised to get the best results. Plan your races for next year and if necessary, book accommodation near to the race venues.

Above all, stay healthy and enjoy some well earned rest.
